Manufacturers vs upfitters
"Upfitters," i.e. companies that add light packages, sirens, radios, etc. should not get the same billing as body manufacturers. Recording a truck as, for example, 2026 Ford / X Upfitting Company suggests that a body was added or that the truck was otherwise built by a company like Pierce or E-One. Instead, the it should be noted as an upfit only - 2026 Ford w/ X Upfitting Company upfit. Or even better, use a ref indicator to add it as a footnote.
Categories
Just a reminder that the "departments operating" categories are for apparatus manufacturers only, not chassis. Some companies, like Spartan, American LaFrance, Simon-Duplex, etc. build or built complete apparatus and also supply or supplied chassis to other apparatus builders. Spartan is the most common current example. However, a "departments operating Spartan ER or Crimson apparatus" is added only when the truck in question has bodywork by Spartan ER / Crimson. So a Spartan-chassised rig built by Marion, Fouts, Fort Garry, etc. would not have a Spartan category added.
Photo links
Photo links have long been a part of the wiki, but lately there have been a couple of developments:
1. Some editors have been linking to Facebook posts, some with multiple photos. This forces users to click through more than one picture to find the truck they're looking for. Please link only to the photos directly. Go directly to the picture of the truck and use the link in the address bar. Several edits with links to Facebook posts have simply been reverted - other editors don't usually have the time or inclination to fix these by sorting through a bunch of photos and linking to the specific truck.
Related, a reminder, do not use links to FB photos beginning with "scontent." These expire and go dead after a short time.
2. Please link to photo…
CT Fire Apparatus History
For those who don't know, this website is a wealth of information for fire apparatus that've served in CT (put together by the CT Firemens' Historical Society Museum), as they intend to have a record of every single motorized apparatus that have ever served in the state, and it's what I've (and a few other people) have been using to fill in the retired trucks sections on a lot of the CT pages :D I think they do have every department, or at least close to now up online, as they have been doing this for several years :)
Highly recommend looking through this, even if you aren't from CT, or have any interest in it: https://thefiremuseum.org/ct-apparatus/

Checking for links
When moving a page or marking it for deletion, please remember to check if there are any other pages that link to it. Deleting / moving pages can create "redlinks" (links to pages that don't exist) that end up on the list of wanted pages.
If pages do link to the original change, please go to those pages and change the links so they go to the new page before making the move or marking it for deletion. There's a "what links here" link for most pages. Uzbek (talk) 16:10, 30 March 2025 (UTC)
Firefighter memorials on pages
I want to start a new thing for this website. I hope that others join me in memorializing fallen members of fire departments on their pages.
Discord photos
Please do not link to photos on Discord. Discord has made some policy changes and the links won't work after 14 days.
Similarly, a reminder not to post Facebook photos opened on a new tab (URLs beginning with scontent) as these won't work after a month.
Any links to these sites will be deleted so we don't end up with a bunch of dead links to deal with in future.
Flickr Links
You don't actually need all the extra 131 characters being pasted at the end of those Flickr URLs.
Instead of pasting this:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/triborough/7332755116/in/photolist-b3JiEZ-Nbjpem-uHGLmD-caYhCm-cb11GL-cb122G-cb11S3-cb16ph-caYiow-cb17F3-HaXMXn-HaXN5M-HaRG1L-HaRGeb-cb13ay-HaXMN4-cqrzfY
You can use:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/triborough/7332755116/
or you can use:
https://flic.kr/p/caYhCm - Which is available from the arrow icon in the bottom left of the picture.
It will take you to the exact same page.
The second (shorter) link is preferable because this is much easier to read in Source mode. The link after the /in/ is what flickr uses to track where links come from; photostreams, albums, faves, galleries or groups.

MediaWiki 1.39 Update
Hello everyone!
I'm sure most of you have noticed the little site notice appearing on the wiki about the MediaWiki 1.39 update. I just wanted to give a little bit more information about it.
What's being updated? Mostly coding underneath the hood. There will be no major design changes. Consider it like replacing the battery of a car - the car will still be the same outwardly, but it just needs some updates underneath.
All Fandom wikis will be updating to MediaWiki 1.39 in the coming month. I don't have an exact timeline at this moment, but expect it to happen in mid-March or April. During the migration to 1.39, the wikis will be set in read-only mode. It shouldn't take more than 30 minutes (major wikis could need more hours). One week before m…
Spellcheck
Fandom has turned off the spellcheck feature due to performance issues affecting the entire platform. It will be turned back on again when the problem is resolved.
While on the subject of spelling, please note that Canadian spelling is most appropriate for articles on Canadian departments / subjects, American spelling for American departments / subjects. Uzbek (talk) 23:31, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
Category note
A few things need to be clarified about the "departments operating" categories assigned to articles.
First, these categories are for apparatus bodies only, not chassis. So if a department has an HME or Spartan truck, the category is only assigned if the bodies were made by HME Ahrens-Fox and Spartan ER / Crimson respectively.
Second, a department can be a current operator or a former operator, not both. For instance, if a department is currently operating a Pierce truck and has also operated Pierce trucks in the past that have since been retired, it would only have one related category - departments operating Pierce apparatus.
EMS
This is a reminder that the Fire Wiki consists of fire departments and agencies, along with search, rescue and extrication agencies and fire apparatus manufacturers. This does not include EMS agencies - the only EMS units included should be those operated by fire departments. EMS agencies, and for that matter law enforcement agencies, are beyond the scope of this wiki. Rather than adding them here, consider the "start a wiki" link on the left hand side of the page as they deserve their own dedicated wikis.
Certain editors have been creating pages for EMS agencies and adding EMS units from outside services to fire department pages. This content will be deleted, so please don't waste your time.
Linked number glitch
In some instances, the wiki software automatically adds a hyperlink to some apparatus pump/tank specs, particularly aerials. It seems to think the specs are phone numbers, and adds square brackets and a Tel notation so you can tap and call on a mobile.
In the source editor, it looks like this:
Fandom is aware of the issue and it's on their list of things to fix - it also happened a few years ago, then stopped. They believe it's specific to mobile edits, possibly using Safari. Feel free to delete the notation if you see it in an article. Uzbek (talk) 14:53, 23 July 2021 (UTC)
Bullet points
As some individual truck entries get more extensive (particularly as old unit designations and more detailed sales info is added), remember that it is not only OK but sometimes preferred that bullet points (asterix - *) are used instead of colons for line spacing. Sometimes bullet points are necessary to separate the text and make it clear which truck is which in a list, as the text can get jumbled together. Don't forget that the entire section should be consistent - use either bullet points or colons for all of the trucks listed in that section.
Map issues
With the new software, maps aren't always displaying correctly. Try refreshing the page. If that doesn't work (and it probably won't), adding more space to the map syntax often does the trick.
For example, replacing this:
fixed the map in question. Not sure if there's something about the line breaks or if it's the simple act of making the change. We have had this problem in the past and these edits have helped. Uzbek (talk) 19:47, 9 October 2020 (UTC)
6x4
When marking an apparatus 6x4, please ensure that it's actually 6x4 - 6x4 refers to a 4-wheel drive vehicle with 3 axles / 6 wheels. Otherwise, it's a tandem. 6x4 fire apparatus isn't very common, so please change any incorrect notations you see. Thanks. Uzbek (talk) 19:14, 9 October 2020 (UTC)
New software
Fandom has switched us over to their new platform. I have as much to learn as anyone else and am still figuring everything out. The look has changed somewhat and as far as editing goes, some things seem easier, other things seem harder. They're also replacing talk pages with article comments.
Please note that this is a mandatory change from Fandom - they're switching over all pages to this platform. Uzbek (talk) 16:12, 19 August 2020 (UTC)
Company Internal Links
There has been some confusion and inconsistency about where to put the internal links to apparatus companies in rosters. I've generally added it to the newest truck - so if there was a 2014 Pierce and a 2017 Pierce, I'd put it on the 2017 and then any newer ones that arrived afterward. However, others have been making it the first example listed, closest to the beginning of an article. So if the 2014 Pierce is at Station 1 and the 2017 at Station 4, the 2014 would have the link to the Pierce article.
Upon reflection, first example makes a lot more sense. It's easier for users to find and likely easier to maintain, especially if it's a long article. It's also standard practice for Wikipedia articles. Please do continue however limit it to on…

Email alerts
I used to get email alerts regularly when changes were made to pages that I follow however I have not been getting them for the last 6-12 months... Am I the only one having this problem?
I have checked my profile settings to ensure the email alerts were still active and nothing has been going to my 'junk folder'.
I found these alerts useful.
Can anyone shed some light on this issue?
